Varanasi has 84 ghats stretching 6.8 km along the Ganges. Each has a unique history. Here are the most important.

Assi Ghat

Southernmost — confluence of Assi & Ganga. Home of Subah-e-Banaras.

Tulsi Ghat

Where Tulsidas composed Ramcharitmanas.

Harishchandra Ghat

One of two cremation ghats. Named after the truthful king Harishchandra.

Kedar Ghat

Modeled after Kedarnath — has a Shiva linga said to have appeared from the earth.

Dashashwamedh Ghat

The main ghat — Lord Brahma performed 10 Ashwamedha sacrifices here.

Manikarnika Ghat

The eternal cremation ghat — fires never go out.

Panchganga Ghat

Confluence of 5 sacred rivers. Alamgir Mosque towers above.

Raj Ghat

Northernmost main ghat — ancient remains have been excavated here.
